This is amazing, Randy Pausch 47 yrs old, A computer Sc. lecturer from Mellon University he died of pancreatic cancer in 2008, but wrote a book 'The last lecture" before then, one of the bestsellers in 2007. What a legacy to leave behind…

In a letter to his wife Jai and his children, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe, he wrote this beautiful "guide to a better life" for his wife and children to follow. May you be blessed by his insight.

POINTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

Personality:

After reading Juan's review on her purse organizer she got from Guardian Pharmacy, I wanted one too! But I hesitated buying from Guardian because I could not find anything I needed or wanted from there ie RM50.00 worth of purchases gets me a FREE purse organizer; or spend RM25.00 and pay RM15 for it?

Well, I was at Popular bookstore on sunday with my gurls and their boyfriends and I got the gorgeous pink purse organizer for RM10.00 for members or RM15.00 for non-members!

Above: Surprise2! - one saturday I came home from work and found what DH brought me - no plastic bag snacks! Successful attempt at teaching DH waste free packaging! Cos I told him please do not buy me any snacks if he is gonna bring them back in plastic bags!!

Above: The guy who repaired this mini rice cooker for 2 - wahhhh smallest rice cooker he had ever seen! And we almost threw it away cos the switch component had come apart from the main body. All that was needed to correct the problem? a SINGLE SCREW (see the big shiny new screw in the picture?) to reattached the black connection piece to the main body! Yup! that's all that was needed to make it WORK AGAIN!

Was at the wet market this morning to get fish for DH and a lady asked me where did I get my lock&lock container? Try Jusco or Carrefour or look for alternatives at 100yen was my reply. People are thinking and making choices now, good to know!

~ The No Impact Project Experiment ~

I had signed up for the
No Impact Project Experiment a few months ago, which is described as an 8-day carbon cleanse to help participants make lifestyle changes that will reduce their carbon footprint and help us understand how a lifestyle that is gentler to the environment can improve our quality of life.

I registered as a participant partly to see what other measures I could take beyond those I am already practicing, and partly because I hope to initiate a "No Impact Week" project on a large scale in the Klang Valley next year. After all, our actions must reflect our environmental values. I cannot hold forth on the deficiencies of REDDor cap-and-trade until my own environmental track record is beyond reproach.

Here are the guidelines and my basic plans for No-Impact Week:

(Note: I will have to drive on Tuesday as the Bentong Farm Sanctuary Helping Hands Visit had been planned weeks in advance and my friends are looking forward to it. However, we will be going 4 persons to a car so it is going to be quite a fuel-efficient trip. Nevertheless, Day 3 of my No-Impact Experiment will be pushed to Wednesday and the rest of my No-Impact Week will resume from there.)

Day 1: Consumption
I will have to audit every purchase I make and save all the rubbish I generate for the entire day in a plastic bag, to be taken out and reviewed the following day.

Day 2: Trash
Trash generated the day before will be separated, audited and reviewed. Participants are urged to rethink their consumption patterns to reduce waste.

Day 3: Transportation
Participants audit the number of fuel miles they travel each day and think of ways to reduce private vehicle usage / fossil fuel usage. Participants are encouraged to experiment with public transportation, ride-sharing programmes and alternative modes of travel.

Day 4: Food
Participants take their food list for whole week and calculate its Foodprint. Where did it come from? How did it get here? What is used in its production? Participants are encouraged to buy local, organic and fair trade whenever possible, and to opt for the least processed and least packaged foods.

Day 5: Energy
Participants carry out home and office energy audits and take action to reduce energy use. Which appliance is used the most? What can we do without? How can we reduce the number of electrical appliances we own and use?

Day 6: Water
Participants analyse their water footprint. How much water do we use at home and at work? What measures can we take to reduce our water use and wastage?

Day 7: Giving Back
Day 7 is spent on community service and environmental projects, and finding ways to contribute regularly to environmental movements and community initiatives.

Day 8: Eco-Sabbath
Participants analyse how they usually spend their day off, and think up what they can do on their rest day that doesn't require electricity, fuel, water wastage and/or unnecessary consumption.

I am happy to say that I have lost the 8lbs I gained during the 3.5 months I stayed home to look after DH. This morning the numbers on the mean machine indicated: 148lbs. So, glad to say that I am back on track to loosing weight. This was solely due to the fact that I had cut down on my food intake especially for dinner and without exercise to boot!

Lately my breakfast was only a cup of black coffee or black tea with lemon and honey; and a green apple and an orange! I do have a full meal at lunch with either rice plus two vegs and one meat or noodles in soup. I have a tea break at 6pm and mostly no dinner. But if I feel hungry I might have a cup of ovaltine with some crackers or brown bread. I feel that I might be lacking in some nutrients; so I am considering a proper meal replacement like what my relatives are taking.

Dropped by Kuchai outlet last Saturday on my way to Taman Desa to collect my basket of organic vegs and happy to say most of the previously pictured bento stuff (minus one or two items) are still available there (but not many pieces!). About gnocchi and Hakka abacus beads...and plants!

I had been meaning to make gnocchi or abacus beads but came out with this instead just because I cannot remember the recipe! Bought me a round yam on the last trip to the wet market; having forgot to print out the recipe; ended up making taro dumplings instead! They are those fish paste like looking roundish lumps at the bottom of the picture (below). I added the boiled dumplings to the balance of the braised pork ribs from last night ~ and the result was delicious, the dumplings were delicate and soft!

While DH lost 8kg during his treatment, I packed on 8 lbs!!! Due to no morning walks and eating-out-for-one!

I resumed my morning walk yesterday doing only half hour, and 45mins today! Me and DH drinking the following vegetables blended twice a day... this is supposed to ease DH's constipation, and me... just for fun!

Above: Got this dish wash liquid (made in Malaysia somemore!) from Simply Organics at Taman Desa, Old Klang Road. With this, I use smaller amounts, my hands are smoother and hey! you can wash your fruits and vegs in it too!

Paid a visit to SPCA one sunday last week... nope.. not to adopt a pet... just bringing some cakes for the volunteers (to say thank you!) and a stack of newspapers for the kennels.

Below: had a craving for fresh popiah and only just found a good source from Imbi market (Crispy Sisters) but alas they served their popiahs in styro! Did not realised this until serving time! argggghhhh

but I did bring my own container for takeaway though.... a saving grace?

Half hour on high heat, remove and place in this (below) insulating container for self slow cooking. A sure winner in saving fuel!

Penang Village @ IOI Mall, Puchong

A couple of sundays back the four of us had a quick meal at

Penang Village in IOI Mall Puchong.

We asked for the combination platter (additional order) to be served before

our main meal but everything come together!

I eat mine like an ice cream sundae - a spoonful of ice with some cendol and bean at a time!

They should inform us before that the steamed rice or tomatoe rice are not included! Otherwise the food was ok lah! Love the Combination Platter though!
